What are intervals so hard?

Maybe it’s that I never do speed work. Or I’m lazy. I know I’m not out of shape,  in fact, I think I’m in pretty good shape at this point.

Yet, when I push my heart rate up past 160 it’s all I can do to maintain and just get to the end of the run.

Last night is a perfect example.

I met my running partner and we set out to do four, just four intervals. Enough to get some benefit but not enough that I’m going to be too miserable.

I set out way too fast.

My HR jumped to 160 almost immediately. It sucked. And I wanted to stop.

But I did it. And at the end of 15 minutes, I felt like I had run a 10K when in fact, it was only two miles.

Thank goodness that’s over.
