Layering for Winter Running

in Running Life

I don’t know where you live, but in NYC, we went from hot and humid to freezing cold.

Literally freezing. It was below 32F when I woke up this morning?

Double You Tee Eff?!?!?

I’m fondly remembering how much we all complained about the heat and humidity. Cue the cold weather complaints in 3, 2 . . .

Anyway, I thought it was a good time to talk about how to layer when it gets cold.

Layering

Disclaimer

Knowing that you may or may not respond to the cold the same way as I do, please take these recommendations as a guidelines not rules. Some people’s body temps run cold, I happen to run hot, so I tend to keep clothing and gear to a minimum as much as I can.

Here’s a quick guide to layering:

50+ degrees (10+ Celsius) Tech shirt and shorts

40–50 degrees (4C) Long sleeve, shorts, bball cap

35–40 degrees (1C) Long sleeve tech shirt, short sleeve base layer, light tights, light gloves, bball cap

30–35 degrees (-1C) Half zip pull over, short sleeve base layer, light tights, light gloves, bball cap, neck buff

0–30 degrees (-17C) Running jacket (of varying weight depending on how cold and wind speed) , short sleeve base layer, tights, gloves, beanie, neck buff

Layering

It’s really not that complicated, right?

I’m working on a video on the topic of recommended winter running products.

Keep an eye out for that coming soon!
