New York City Bike Commute

in Running Life

Ever wonder what it’s like to commute by bicycle around New York City? This is not about getting on a road bike on Saturday morning.

No, this is about heading out the door Monday through Friday, rolling up the right side of your pants (so as not to get chain grease on it), throwing your leg over the top tube of a bike you wouldn’t give a second thought of stealing if you saw it unlocked on the street and taking your life into your own hands in New York City traffic.

It’s not really as bad as that, but it can create some white knuckle moments.

What do you think?

  1. Looks like a lot of fun – and hearing the Allman Brothers Band isn't a bad way to start the day.

I've run to and from work my fair share of times, but have never biked. I've often wondered if people who do it regularly ever have any issues with people randomly sticking their arms out their car windows or suddenly opening their doors. I'm sure knicking side view mirrors probably isn't fun either.

All in all, it looks like a good way to get around once you learn the ropes and get used to it. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I can honestly say, living in NYC has scared me enough to never want to get on a bike ever. I've heard and seen too many horror stories, plus I'm a klutz. It's just not a good plan.

I totally envy you, though! Do you bike to work?

    • I do bike to work unless it's super cold or VERY rainy. It's actually pretty safe, one just needs to be smart and aware of what's going on around you. 🙂

  3. This is great. You have captured what I do every day! I can't wait to forward it to people whom comment on my bike commuting. Btw, I agree that Madison Avenue sucks, and midtown is way congested. For what its worth, you (and I) are definitely acclimated to the traffic so it seems like no big deal. I wonder how bike share newbies will handle the traffic. My recommendation to newbies is that commuting in NYC is safer, in my opinion, that riding in suburbia. Traffic here often moves at a snail's pace, and if you use sense and generally follow the rules of the road, it is no more dangerous to bicycle ride in NYC than walk.
