How Cycling Helps My Running

in Black Toenail Chronicles

Last Saturday I got back on the bike after not riding for like six months.

And I loved it for more reasons than I’m going to state here. But primarily, the reasons I was so happy to be back in the saddle are:

  1. I love riding my bike. Nothing is more fun that pedaling and feeling the momentum of your own power.
  2. It’s great cross training for running. I get that it’s virtually the same motion, but you’re using a different set of muscles to do so.
  3. It’s built in interval training. If you’re riding outside, you are going to inevitably hit uphills and downhills. And while a good cyclist will pedal through a downhill, you’re not going to use the same power going downhill that you do uphill.
  4. It helps to build your strength and endurance by changing up your workouts from running to cycling.
  5. It’s a nice change. I’ll admit I get bored running at times and changing it to cycling once in a while reminds me that exercise isn’t just about health and getting faster/stronger, it’s also about having fun.

Of course, I forgot that after not being on the bike in forever and a day, the next day would be tough. And I wound up cutting by planned long run down by more miles than I care to admit.

But, onwards and upwards!
